Authorities on environment pollution in the EP Act

 

The Central Government may, if it considers it necessary for environment protection pass an order (published in the Official Gazette) and constitute an authority or authorities for the purpose of exercising and performing its powers and functions. The authority or authorities can take measures with respect to its other powers mentioned in the Act, under the supervision and control of the Central Government.

These authorities are set up under separate notifications issued by the government, in the manner and for the general purpose mentioned above. Click here for a list of such authorities.

Powers of authorities

The authorities may be empowered to direct and control officers appointed by the Central Government. Their other powers are usually specified in the notifications constitution these authorities.

Specialised authorities

Some of these authorities are specifically constituted for carrying out specific functions of the Central Government. The Central Government has declared several areas as ecologically sensitive or fragile areas under Section 3.2.v of the EP Act or under Rule 5 of the EP Rules.
